Cable Stitch Knitting: The Fisherman Sweater

Course Overview

The fisherman sweater, or in its most traditional form, the gansey, is a working garment: meant to stand up to salt water, sea, cold, and abrasion - and to keep its wearer warm and dry. The class will cover the basics of cable stitch knitting: the tools, traditional techniques and their evolution into contemporary cable knit garments. You will begin a gansey in miniature, and will leave the class with the ability to design your own cabled garment. Traditional yarns and supplies will be available for purchase. Students should come to this class with at least a basic ability to knit. A supply list will be provided; most supplies will be items knitters already own.
