Course Overview

For those prone to picking plants and wondering what can be made of them as they wander through the forests and fields of this region, both basketry and natural dying offer many possibilities for humble leaves and sticks to become something much more. In this team-taught session, students will learn how to dye natural materials and then make those materials into baskets. Tina and Karen will cover the entire process, from gathering to creating dye baths and using mordants to weaving, using a variety of basketry techniques to turn leaves, barks, stems and grasses into creative, useful and beautiful things. Students will complete a variety of small projects, including ornaments, jewelry and small containers, and leave with ample inspiration to continue gathering, dying and weaving on their own.
