Blacksmith Shed Timber Frame (Service Learning)

Course Overview

Learn the basic skills of timber framing while helping 'Raise The Roof' as North House Folk School welcomes the involvement of both experienced and aspiring timber framing enthusiasts to finish cutting and framing the latest classroom development on campus - the blacksmith timbered shed. Learn basic mortise and tenon joinery, as well as more technical through-tenons, shouldered mortises and scarf-joinery, finishing the final stages of timber framing. Participants will explore the use of traditional tools in timber framing as well as adaptations using common and specialized modern tools, and as time allows, cut and assemble outdoor timbered classroom trestles. Contribute to North House's ‘Raise the Roof’ Campaign – a campus-wide effort to improve classroom resources. Participants in this service learning course are encouraged to attend all four days of the project, but individuals able to participate only three days are also welcome to attend. All participants are asked to attend the first day of the course. Tuition covers three or four days of involvement.
