Course Overview

The wood of the black ash tree, unique among the hardwoods of northern forests, peels apart into long thin splints which can be woven into sturdy baskets of all shapes and sizes. Join instructor Dennis Chilcote as he introduces the process of preparing a black ash splint for basket-making, no easy task. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll assist in pounding and peeling a black ash log, and learn the basics of this distinct style of basketry. You will also learn about the simple but effective tools, mostly home-made, that are used in this craft. Increase your awareness and appreciation for basketry and the remarkable black ash tree.
