Course Overview

Veteran instructors Charlie Mayo and John Zasada return to campus this spring for one session only, and this time, they have a project in hand (or perhaps, under foot?). That’s right- you can now learn to weave birch bark by making your very own pair of boots! Once woven by Siberian and Scandinavian peasants and lined with cattail down, wool or other natural materials, these boots provided an inexpensive alternative straight from the forest. Yes, you can wear them, but you may want to display these beauties on the coffee table as a conversation starter. Join John and Charlie to craft this unique project, learn the techniques of birch bark harvest, preparation and weaving, and immerse in the lore of this quintessentially northern craft.
