Bentwood Box: A Scandinavian Classic

Course Overview

If you want to be loved, you need to learn to let go and bend a little! Scandinavians have been bending wood for boats and boxes as long as anyone admits to remembering, and any prudent person loves Scandinavians…or at least their boxes. Utilizing gouges, planes, rasps and other basic hand tools, students will shape the pieces for the box and then will steam bend a thin board for the box’s walls. Lashing techniques will be utilized for joinery. Traditional methods of box adornment will be discussed such as incising, chipcarving, woodburning, rosemaling, and kolrosing. Each student will have the opportunity to apply their own styling preferences so each box will be unique and one of a kind. Historically, Scandinavians used bentwood boxes to carry almost anything that would fit, from tools to lunch. Your traditionally handcrafted Scandinavian bentwood box is sure to display handsomely with or without contents!
