Course
Bags of the Boundary Waters and Beyond
Course Overview
Head out on the lake, into the woods, or to the grocery store in style and function with a custom handmade waxed canvas backpack. In this beginner-friendly class, we will cover all of the basics including fabrics and notions, industrial sewing techniques, and design. Students will spend the first day learning, honing, and mastering different aspects of backpack production, covering straight and zig zag stitches, binding, useful seams, leatherwork, riveting, hot cutting, and pockets through small projects. Over the next two days, we will design, layout, and assemble the backpacks at a relaxed pace. The size and proportion of the final bag will be up to the student as will the use of materials and appropriate notions. Students are invited to bring their favorite bags for examination and discussion.
