Sashiko-Inspired Hand Stitched Patches
Course Overview
Learn to make sturdy, good-looking patches to mend and customize your clothes, inspired by the Japanese tradition of Sashiko stitching. No experience or sewing machine required – you'll learn hand sewing techniques for visible mending that you can be proud to show off. Bring something you’d like to mend, or make a practice patch in class. Hand-stitched mending can be a pathway to mindfulness and creative expression, as well as a way to care for our textiles, the people we love, and our planet.
Students age 10 and up may register independently. Youth ages 8-9 may register if an accompanying adult is also registering for the class. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees.
Optional Tools:
- Something made of fabric to patch
- Any fabric scraps for patches that you have and want to share
- Magnification if needed for close-up work
- Something to eat if you’d like to have dinner or snacks while we work (nothing too messy please)
