Course Overview

Carving wood is an immensely satisfying and endlessly creative activity for kids and grown ups alike. Who doesn’t want to whittle a stick now and then? With a few important techniques and skills, it can be a safe(r) pursuit too. In this family workshop, we will learn to carve a carrot necklace out of wood, an ideal first carving project. We will all work together learning to safely use many fun tools including a vegetable peeler, shaving horse, draw knife, spokeshave, and of course carving knives! We will learn to notice wood grain direction and why it matters. We will learn five basic knife carving moves. We will have carrot themed snacks and play a carrot themed game when we need a break. This class is definitely going to be fun!  No carving experience is needed for this class, open to kids ages 8+ accompanied by a grown-up. Tuition and materials fee covers one adult-child pair.
