Service Learning: Outdoor Timbered Benches
Course Overview
Now that the new Welcome Center is completed, we’re ready to sit back and admire the view from campus…on some new timbered benches. These signature benches, designed by Peter Henrikson to celebrate the 10th anniversary of NHFS, are built using timber framing techniques and can be found all over Grand Marais. Lend a hand, learn some new tricks, and enjoy good company and a satisfying outcome as you build six benches for North House. This class is a great introduction to the basic techniques used in traditional timber framing. Students will have the opportunity to try out professional-grade timber framing tools, as well as learn to use a variety of traditional hand tools. They will also receive a copy of the project plans for future use and leave a legacy on the North House campus.
Students should note that while this course welcomes participants of all levels, they should expect to utilize a variety of power tools and work with large timbers–thus, some woodworking experience is helpful but not required.
