Course Overview

Fingerweaving is one of many traditional methods utilizing ordinary materials to make beautiful objects for use in daily life. Starting with medium weight wool yarn, we’ll set up our project using wooden sticks. A hatband and bag strap are easy to complete during the class time, but those who wish to make a wider and longer belt/sash or scarf will need to do some homework beyond class time. In class, we will cover the full color, lightning and diamond patterns. Optional evening sessions will include more advanced pattern techniques. A variety of samples of woven work will be available for discussion. Students are encouraged to bring their own yarns, but a small selection of yarn will be available for purchase ($50 and up). Youth ages 12+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and should provide their own yarns. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. Students ages 14+ can choose to register independently.

Required Tools

  • Students are asked to bring their own yarns. The recommended type for beginners is Lamb’s Pride Bulky, 85% wool/15% mohair, 4oz skeins, available from many yarn stores and online retailers. Bring 3-5 skeins in different colors. After registration, instructor contact information will be provided so you can ask questions about other suitable yarns.

Optional Tools

  • Eye magnification if you need it
