The arrival of ice in the northland requires specific skills to be able to comfortably and safely enjoy the outdoors. In this day-long course, veteran winter travel guide Garrett Conover will cover ice conditions commonly found on the lakes and rivers of the north from fall to spring. He’ll discuss safety, assessment strategies, ice morphology, and the use of chisels. After a morning of in-class discussion, you’ll head out to a local lake, where Garrett will demonstrate ice-hooking in a canoe (as conditions permit), and cover a variety of topics related to winter travel. You'll cover fire-building and cooking, and enjoy tea, great conversation, and the opportunity to explore the early winter woods. Students who would like to participate in the in-class discussion (9am-11:30) portion of the course can do so at a reduced rate of $40.
