Course Overview

Create bright colors and unique patterns in this one day (or afternoon!) bundle dye class using kitchen waste as well as hand-harvested flowers from the North House dye garden! Bundle dyeing involves laying out dye materials on fabric, rolling it up, and then steaming it to impart beautiful color on the cloth. By the end of the day, students will leave with a basic understanding of how natural dyes work, how to use them for creating color, and possibly some ideas for starting their own natural dye gardens!

All levels of experience are welcome! Students should expect to spend a fair amount of time on their feet, and in crouched or bent positions intermittently. Students 16+ are welcome to sign up for this course. Youth 12+ may attend if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and two materials fees.

Required Tools

  • Comfortable shoes for standing in and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. An apron works great as well
  • Rubber gloves (long kitchen kind)
  • An old bath towel (two if you have room!)
  • A few pieces of extra cloth to dye made from natural fibers such as linen, cotton or silk. New or thrifted work well!
  • A plastic bag or ziploc for bringing home any damp items

Optional Tools

  • Students are welcome to bring along any fresh or dried plant materials they would like to experiment with
