Prudence Johnson’s long and happy career has landed her in two feature films (A River Runs Through It, A Prairie Home Companion), on national radio, and on musical theatre and concert stages across North America and occasionally Europe. She has released more than a dozen recordings, including albums of songs by the Gershwins, Hoagy Carmichael, and Greg Brown, a collection of international lullabies, and the poetry of Edna St Vincent Millay set to music.
In recent years, her focus has been on creating multi-media works for concert and theater stages that blend performance with her interests in history and literature. Prudence received a Presidential Fellowship from Hamline University and graduated Summa Cum Laude in ’98. Other awards and grants include a McKnight Fellowship, an Artists Initiative grant from the MN State Arts Board, and several Arts Board tour-support grants. She also works at Louise Erdrich’s Birchbark Books in Minneapolis, and lives on the banks of the Mississippi River.
