Decorative Ironwork Intensive

Course Overview

From fireplace tools to shelf brackets and kitchen racks, decorative ironwork can highlight any part of the Northern home. This course will enable beginner and intermediate blacksmiths to work alongside a master blacksmith to design and build their own unique piece of ironwork. The course will start with a general introduction to design needs and aesthetics, as well as an overview of design physics and philosophy. Students will learn to ask the right questions, think within certain parameters, and solve problems creatively. Books and resource materials will be provided to inspire design. Students will then forge test pieces to try out their ideas. Students will spend the next three days working independently on their projects; the instructor will demonstrate techniques to the group as needs arise. Materials fee includes the use of coal/gas for forge work as well as the cost of steel.
