Basketry
Northwoods Carrying Basket
Course Overview
The North Woods is full of beautiful, colorful material suitable for basketry. In this class we’ll use a variety of local materials to create a sturdy basket, perfect for everyday use. Students will learn the ways of processing a variety of materials including black ash and birch bark while engaging in discussion of basketry traditions, weaving techniques and seasonal harvest practices. Each basket will include a sturdy base of black ash, but the rest is up to the maker! A variety of barks will be available to use as we learn basic weaving techniques and basketry principles. Leather handles will be added for comfortable carrying. Each participant will create a unique, harty basket that reflects the northern Minnesota landscape and will gain the knowledge to continue the craft on their own.
