Woodworking & Furniturecraft
Build Custom Furniture with Dimensional Lumber
Course Overview
One interpretation of folk craft is simple and straightforward: the things people make using the materials they have readily available. In the twenty-first century, lumber yards and home improvement retailers always have a supply of dimensional lumber for relatively cheap; learn how to turn it into functional custom furniture for the home or studio. From tables and benches to shelving and storage, thoughtful designs can be constructed with a few tools and some creativity. Class will cover the following: types of lumber and fasteners available, sourcing basic tools needed, basic design and drafting techniques, pattern layout, assembly and finishing options. Students will each build and take home a 36” x 60” table that can pack flat for transport; skills learned in the process can then be applied to create custom furniture at home.
