The new outdoor student commons is truly taking shape - gardens
to paving bricks, trees to walkway lighting. On the horizon: an
inspiring outdoor space that celebrates our harbor home in oh so
many ways. BUT, there is still important work to do.
Understand that investing in the campus will
help make North House stronger.
We have a $20,000 match in place to double your donation. Your
donation will help us complete construction, as securing an
additional $75,000+ of funding is essential. An outdoor timbered
deck for students, off-street parking, storm water management &
filtering, covered entryways for classroom buildings – your
investment will move North House forward.

The mobile forest and benches have been moved on to the commons. There's still a lot of detail work to be completed, but come on down and enjoy our new outdoor space! |

The upper parking area is now open for parking with paving bricks looking out over campus |

And once weather had warmed, another group of volunteers joined us on campus to plant many more flowers and plants |
|
|
|
More trees were planted, and bench seating was installed in the amphiteatre area |
|
|

Later in the spring asphalt was put down in the middle of campus |

Also during volunteer weekend, the deck off the Blue Building was nearly complete--the perfect place to enjoy lunch on a sunny day! |

During April's Volunteer and Service Learning Weekend a group of students hand-raised the new entry for the Blue Building |

Due to mild weather, the work continued late into December. Here, the first row of paving bricks is laid on the North side of campus.
|
|
|
|
The expanded upper parking area (now in use) has a concrete wall to helps delineate the space. In spring ampitheatre seating will be poured beside it.
|
|
|
|
All of the paving bricks on the North section of campus are in--when spring arrives asphalt will be poured for the central part of the commons.

Progress on the commons began in late September. The old asphalt parking lot was removed to make way for a better community space.

The centerpiece of the commons is a compass rose. Here, a cardinal point (covered in a protective film) is placed into newly poured concrete.

Paving bricks on each end of campus will help create clean runoff into Lake Superior

Dec 2010, the final SIP panel is put up on the structure, making it fully enclosed. (Well, aside from doors and windows, which are coming soon!)

OVERVIEW
Raise The Roof: Campaign For North House Folk
School is a major, multi-year commitment designed to secure and
enhance North House’s rich educational potential.
North House has emerged as a truly unique and essential northern
resource. Our commitment to learning as a lifetime endeavor, our
passion for the North and its story, our focus on nurturing
community, our hunger for engaging life through the work of our
hands – each has found its place here.
The Raise The Roof vision has taken shape over a series of years. At
its heart are three fundamental commitments:
Home, Harbor
Within the North House community there is an unwavering sense that
our home is on the Grand Marais Harbor. It is from this place that
our dreams will be launched and realized.
Quality, Safety, Community
For the North House mission to achieve its educational
potential, our entire campus must project our commitment to quality,
safety and community.
Stability, Strength
As an emerging nonprofit, North House’s ability to achieve its
mission and capacity to welcome a diversity of students is directly
connected to our financial capabilities. Therefore, increasing
annual giving and expanding our endowment is essential.
The symbolism of the title fits North House perfectly– it is the
hands of many that will raise the roof. We welcome your questions
and look forward to your involvement.
Getting Involved!
The helping hands of many are the essential ingredient that have
made North House a reality!
